Quote of the Day

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

From today’s Wall Street Journal, “Battling the Parasite in Your Pool,” comes this gem:

No product either durable or disposable is designed to contain bowel movements while under water for a long time,” says Lance Latham, a spokesman for Kimberly-Clark, which makes Huggies Little Swimmers diapers. “Little Swimmers are not intended to contain diarrhea.”

Jerry Lewis Packing Heat In Vegas

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Jerry Lewis was stopped in the Las Vegas airport last week after airport screeners found a handgun in his luggage.

Reuters tells us the octogenarian funnyman was on his way to a one-night only, one-man performance in Mount Pleasant, Michigan when folks at the airport found the unload .22 pistol in his bag.

Seeing as how carrying a handgun in an airport is generally frowned upon, airport officials detained him for a bit, before releasing him on his own reconnaissance with a citation for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. As for the gun, well the airport fellas hung on to that for Lewis. If he wants it back, he’ll have to appear in court.

The Reuters story then goes on for about four paragraphs about all the stuff Lewis did in the past. This is apparently for the readers who just emerged from a 60-year stay in a bomb bunker.

Dean Martin was unavailable for comment. (Most likely because Dean Martin is no longer with us).

positive about the downturn

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

In my mailbox this morning:

Below is a press release by Schroder Investment Management ($259 AUM as of March 31, 2008) regarding their semi-annual Schroder Investment Management Omnibus Survey which gages investor’s sentiment. Although more than half of U.S. investors recently surveyed in the, believe the U.S. economy is currently in a recession over 94% of these same investors still expect a positive annual rate of return on their investments over the next 12 months.

It’s the Lake Wobegon economy, where are investment returns are above average! (Or, in this case, positive.) Insanity!

Columnist Robert Novak diagnosed with Brain Tumor

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Robert Novak, the Chicago-Sun Times columnist who became a household name after his participation in the outing of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

This news comes less than a week after Novak was cited by Washington DC police for hitting a pedestrian with his car.  According to Novak, he didn’t even know that he had hit the pedestrian, and kept driving until he was stopped by a bicyclist who told him of the accident.

Novak was the long-time host of “Crossfire,” and is known for his staunchly conservative views that often created a struggle between him and co-hosts on the political show.

I’m not a fan of his political beliefs, and think his handling of the Valerie Plame information was not exactly above-board, but I don’t wish potentially-fatal diseases on anyone.  Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.   Otherwise, I’ll be left just arguing with the likes of Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter…and that could get ugly.

The next time you forget a face at a party, the new boss’s name or your wife’s birthday, you may want to consider sleeping more, Swiss research suggests.

web attention deficit disorder

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Union Square Ventures (via Marco):

Two things will need to happen if the recent pace of innovation on the web is going to be sustained over the next few years. The next generation of services will need to have an impact on the real world and the real economy, not just an attention economy driven by self expression and discovery online. These new services will also need to reach real people, many of who use few if any web services today.

We can post and comment and tweet and tag and follow all we want in cyberspace; but if it ultimately doesn’t change anything in real space, we haven’t really accomplished anything.
