Giuliani ‘08, Endorsed By 3 Out Of 5 Mafia Dons
Well, I guess that is one way to look at this one.
It’s not really that surprising that some people want Rudy Giuliani dead. He has been controversial in what he has done almost since day one. So it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that while he was a U.S. attorney the mafia discussed taking him out (especially since he was going after organized crime).
Well, as it turned out two of the five family heads, mafia bosses John Gotti (Gambino family) and Carmine “The Snake” Persico (Colombo family) were in favor of having Giuliani sleep with the fishes. But this is all kind of old news. The memo that states this is from 1987 and was found in a file being reviewed during the prosecution of a former FBI agent Roy Lindley DeVecchio who is on trial for leaking information.
While some might think that this is going to be a big play for Giuliani and that he will be able to push this during his run for the presidency, using it as an example of how he was tough on crime, others think his people may let this one die down.
Those thinking that the Giuliani people would not push this information to help Giuliani’s campaign were probably the ones paying attention to the second half of the memo. That the part that discusses how an assistant prosecutor in Giuliani’s office was feeding information to the mob back in 1989.
So, it’s a give and take. Either you keep quiet about having been so strong on crime that you earned a mafia hit and hope that no one else brings up the fact that your own people were feeding information to the mob, or you make a big deal out of how tough you are on crime, but have to admit that one of own people was undermining your authority (and the law). Tough call there, but I bet the news will be all over this one. I can see big headlines now, though they’ll differ depending on which paper is writing them.
