Fame

I know we are a culture obsessed with fame. We look to celebrities constantly, trying to get the latest news and gossip about them. There are over a dozen magazines out there whose sole purpose is to keep us informed as to what celebrities are doing and not doing.

Which leads me to this one: When did it become newsworthy (or gossip worthy) to report about what celebrities are not doing? And I am not talking about drugs or who they are not sleeping with or no longer marrying, I am talking about the actual jobs of actors and actresses.

People Magazine reports that Scarlett Johansson will not be playing Jenna Jameson in the upcoming movie Heartbreaker based on her autobiography How to Make Love Like a Porn Star. In fact, not only will Scarlett not being playing her, but she was never actually offered the role or approached about the film. A rep for Johansson said “Scarlett has never seen a script nor been approached about this project” adding “She also has no interest in playing this role.” Ouch!

But seriously. Reporting on Scarlett not taking a role she wasn’t interested in or offered seems like a weak way to get porn into your headlines, doesn’t it People? Or maybe just a genius move by Jameson’s people to get Heartbreaker some early publicity.

  1. I’d say it’s more likely that it was done as publicity for Jameson. It’s also because a rumor started that Johansson would be doing it because Jameson made a statement about how excellent she thought she’d be for the role. So then false rumors have to be put to rest.
